Royal Navy's Type 22 class frigates were originally designed to conduct Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) missions. Afterwards anti-surface and anti-aircraft capabilities were added to these ships. Its weapon system includes two Super Lynx ASW helicopters, a 114mm caliber naval gun, Harpoon or Exocet anti-ship missiles, SeaWolf Surface-to-Air missiles (SAM), and Goalkeeper Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS).

The Royal Navy (RN) ordered 14 Type 22 frigates. Five ex-RN frigates were sold to the navies of Brazil and Chile. In December 2002 the governments of the United Kingdom and Romania agreed on the sale of two regenerated and modernized ships. The upgrade was carried out by BAE Systems under £116 million contract.
